Genting Group celebrates Founder’s Day by handing over the Dementia Care Centre to the management team, led by the Geriatric Division, Universiti Malaya
A purpose-built dementia day care facility in Malaysia, for charity
Kuala Lumpur, 28th February 2019 – At the Genting Founder’s Day celebration this evening attended by over 1500 people to commemorate the remarkable legacy of the Genting Group founder, the late Tan Sri (Dr) Lim Goh Tong, Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay, Genting Group’s Chairman & Chief Executive, presented a plaque to Professor Dr Tan Maw Pin, Medical Professor of Universiti Malaya and Medical Director of the Dementia Care Centre and Encik Muhammad Mujada Rosli, the Centre Manager, to symbolise the handover of the new Dementia Care Centre to the management team, led by the Geriatric Division, Universiti Malaya. The ceremony was witnessed by Professor Dr Adeeba bt Kamarulzaman, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya and Puan Sri Cecilia Lim, Patron of the Dementia Care Centre.

The Centre was built following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Genting Group and Universiti Malaya during the inaugural Genting Founder’s Day held on 28 February last year when the Genting Group and Universiti Malaya agreed to collaborate in setting up and operating a Dementia Care Centre.
“Genting Berhad has over the past decade been involved in research and development for new treatments and new ways for early detection of Alzheimer’s Disease through our various investments in life sciences companies. We hope that our investments in these companies will benefit Malaysia, through knowledge transfer via collaborations between these world class companies and researchers with our local universities and local researchers, through bringing cutting edge technology to Malaysia to combat ageing and diseases, and through creating employment in Malaysia. But until a cure is found, people with dementia, their family and caregivers need our help and support. As such, I am pleased that in conjunction with this year’s Genting Founder’s Day, this new Dementia Care Centre is now ready to be handed over to the management team, led by the Geriatric Division of Universiti Malaya. The Centre is purpose built and designed to offer day care services for people suffering from dementia and will be operated on a charitable basis as part of the Genting Group’s corporate social responsibility,” said Tan Sri Lim.

Globally, statistics show that one in 20 persons above the age of 60 will have dementia and the number is expected to triple from 50 million in 2018 to 152 million by 2050. Recognising the need for a dedicated facility to provide care for patients suffering from dementia and training to caregivers, this 825.3 square metre day care facility located in Segambut, Kuala Lumpur is owned by the Genting Group and is the result of the collaboration between the Genting Group and Universiti Malaya. The personnel from Universiti Malaya’s Geriatric Division have been instrumental in providing input to the design of the Centre and training the Centre’s caregivers and staff. This collaboration between the Genting Group and Universiti Malaya will also see an acceleration of research efforts in dementia care in Malaysia.
The Centre is designed to accommodate up to 50 patients at any one time. Facilities at the Centre include a quiet room, a resting room, a prayer room, a physiotherapy and cognitive stimulation room, consultation rooms, meeting rooms and offices. The costs to build and equip the centre as well as the on-going operational costs will be borne by the Genting Group. The Centre will start operations in the near future.
“We are extremely grateful for the opportunity to work with the Genting Group to establish the Dementia Care Centre,” said Professor Dr Tan Maw Pin. “We are also extremely touched by their interest especially Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay in helping families of persons living with dementia. The Centre will be providing day care to persons living with dementia so that their family members can continue to work, earn an income and be a productive member of society.”
In addition to patient day care, the Dementia Care Centre will provide training to caregivers, family members and professionals involved in dementia care. It will also be a place for caregivers to network and share best practices in the care of people living with dementia. Puan Sri Cecilia Lim will serve as patron of the Dementia Care Centre.
In conjunction with the Founder’s Day, an inaugural Eminent Speakers Conference Series was also co-organised by the Genting Group and the Universiti Malaya earlier that day. Three of the four eminent speakers at the conference were invitees of the Genting Group and they are founders of life sciences companies which the Genting Group has invested in over the past decade. As part of the conference, the Malaysian Prime Minister YAB Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad who epitomizes healthy ageing, held a dialogue with the speakers, and representatives from Genting Berhad and Universiti Malaya to discuss medical advances and exchange ideas on healthy ageing.
The evening also saw Genting Group presenting to 23 employees a token of appreciation for their long service at the organization for 40, 30, 25, 15 and 5 years. Each has demonstrated life principles of the late Founder and Genting’s Core Values which is Hard Work, Honesty, Harmony, Loyalty and Compassion to bring the organization to greater heights.
