Who on earth will allow anyone to touch, let alone sit on a 350 year old Sultan Bed? One can actually do so here at The Settlement Hotel. This prized bed is in fact placed at the front porch of the hotel on top of a floor tiled with century old tiles from a mosque in Palembang, Sumatra in Indonesia.

The Settlement Hotel in Melaka is one unique hotel that is also a showpiece of the owner. The owner is an avid collector of antiques and he showcases some of his collection in his hotel capturing, and in a way preserving Melaka’s illustrious history for all to see and experience.

Remember that 350 year old Sultan Bed mentioned earlier? It is just the tip of the iceberg. You are even allowed to stay inside some of his collection of which is the highlight of this article; the villas. There are two categories of villas here; the Junior Villas and the Luxury Villas.

What makes them unique is that these villas are actually very old houses brought over and rebuilt into villas. Part that have deteriorated over time such as some of the wood panels have been replaced with new wood but the most of them are original.

Doors, windows, pillars, etc. built during the old days are solid and heavy. The hinges used are solid and have their own distinct character. The villas are put together using olden day building methods where no nails are used (except for the hinges and latches).

The Villas are furnished with furniture that look like antiques from the drawer to the bed. All these gives the room an aura of years gone as if one has travelled back in time where wooden carracks sail the seas, and folks roam the streets on bullock carts and horses.

While the room may have such an aura, the mattresses are all modern day mattresses that are comfortable to sleep on with comfortable pillows. Lights too turn on with the flick of a switch. Also the air-conditioning is really good and hence modern day comfort is attained.
