Altingsburd Lighthouse
Kuala Selangor
From a distance one will be able to see a part of this white structure sticking out of the side of a hill. Right at the peak of Melawati HIll stands this structure; the Dutch lighthouse or the Altingsburd Lighthouse. Like most if not all lighthouses; the Altingsburd Lighthouse was built to guide ships.
The Altingsburd Lighthouse.
The Altingsburd Lighthouse stands at a height of 27 metres tall and it was built back in 1907. It certainly does not look old as it has been well maintained. Till this day it beams its lights some 18 nautical miles into the Straits of Malacca, guiding ships that sail along this part of the coast safely away from shore.
Entering the lighthouse is forbidden. We were lucky enough to be granted entrance into the lighthouse. 1907 is the date this lighthouse was built.
Stairs that spiral all the way to the top of the lighthouse.
Entry into the Altingsburd Lighthouse is not permitted but we were lucky enough to have been granted a visit inside the lighthouse. Upon opening the very heavy steel door, one gets an amazing sight of the inside with stairs spiralling to the top. This structure that has been standing here for so many years is really tough. The brick walls are thick, much thicker that the walls of houses built here in Malaysia.
From this deck one gets an amazing view of the area.
View of the coast from the lighthouse.
At the top deck, one gets an amazing view of the surrounding. With my camera I managed to zoom all the way out for a closer look at the coast as well as the surrounding towns. With such a view it makes sense to build a fort here (this lighthouse too). Above us eagles circle about perhaps in search of food.
The bulb that shines out to sea to guide ships sailing this area.
Lighthouse photo collectors will certainly want to take some photos with the Altingsburd Lighthouse as part of their photo collection. There are various places where one can take a photo of the light house such as from the gate or from within the grounds of the Kuala Selangor District Historical Museum where the canons are located.
Note: Entrance to the Altingsburd Lighthouse is not permitted.

Melawati Hill in Kuala Selangor is a historical place to add to one’s places to visit list. It used to be a fortress that has seen battles, and was ruled by various rulers. Today it is a peaceful place wanting to tell its story.
A visit to the Kuala Selangor District Historical Museum is a must when one visits Melawati Hill. This is where the history of the place is showcased for all to see.
