There are moments in life when you stumble upon something so unexpectedly brilliant, you begin to question whether you’ve accidentally wandered into an alternate universe. A place where logic is suspended, calories don’t count, and meat… glorious, unapologetic meat… arrives in chunks that would make a medieval king weep with joy. This, ladies and gentlemen, is what happens when you walk into Gembira BBQ.

Now, let me paint you a picture. You don’t get those tragic, see-through slices of meat that flap about on the grill like damp tissue paper. Oh no. What you get here are proper, muscular, steak-like slabs. The kind of meat that looks like it lifts weights in its spare time. Lamb, beef, chicken, fish, etc. each one sitting there, silently daring you to cook it badly. And you will try your best not to, because you’re better than that.

Here they actually put real slabs of meat, unlike the many Korean BBQ places that offer thin slices of meat.

Then come the sauces… Good heavens, the sauces are a bewildering orchestra of flavours; sweet, sour, salty, spicy, all largely inspired by the bold, unapologetic chaos of Chinese-style (China style) concoctions. You stand there, staring at them, wondering if you’re about to create a masterpiece, or accidentally summon a dragon. Either way, it’s thrilling.

Lots of choices when it comes to sauce.

Now, for those who, for reasons I cannot begin to comprehend, occasionally tire of endless meat, there are vegetables and fruits. Yes, they exist. Trust me, I briefly saw them somewhere. They seemed, healthy. Personally, I am no fan of vegetables, but if you are, your needs are catered to. But if you only eat vegetables, this place is not for you.

There are also snacks like sweets, crackers, and the sort of things that whisper, “You shouldn’t, but you absolutely will.” Alongside these are cooked items like fried chicken and other bits and bobs which, if we’re being honest, are, errr… fine. Not life changing, nor are they revolutionary. They’re the supporting actors in a film where the meat is very clearly the star, the director, and possibly the stunt coordinator.

They do have a vegetable counter, and a place for fruits. These here are a part of it. I do remember seeing more greens.

But here’s the real magic. The place is air-conditioned. There is none of that sweaty, smoky chaos where you leave smelling like you’ve just lost a wrestling match in a charcoal factory. The BBQ setup is gloriously smokeless, meaning you can walk out afterwards without people assuming you’ve been moonlighting as a satay vendor.

And then the price… RM39.90 (as at time of writing, circa 2026) per person. At this point, you begin to suspect witchcraft, or accounting errors. Because for the quality of meat you’re getting, this feels less like a meal and more like you’ve pulled off a heist.

Comfortable dining, and you will not come out smelling like you’ve wrestled a satay seller.

So yes, Gembira BBQ isn’t just good. It’s suspiciously good. The kind of place that makes you lean back in your chair, pat your stomach, and wonder if you should tell others, or keep it as your own delicious little secret. Because in a world full of mediocre buffets and disappointing grills, this place stands tall, flexing its meaty biceps, whispering, “Come hungry, and possibly leave questioning everything you thought you knew about value for money.”
