A Delightful Halal Dim Sum Discovery at Canning Dim Sum, Ipoh
By Phil Foo
On a bright morning in Ipoh, my friend and I found ourselves drawn to Canning Dim Sum, a renowned establishment that offers not just dim sum, but a dim sum Discovery and experience. Known for its traditional Cantonese offerings and vibrant atmosphere that is Instagram ready, this place promised a culinary journey that I was eager to embark upon.
As we walked through the entrance, the lively chatter of fellow diners greeted me. The ambiance was warm, uniquely designed or rather decorated with colourful lights, and certain private booths and seating areas. For a dim sum restaurant, Canning Dim Sum Ipoh certainly is different.
We quickly settled into our seats, excited to begin our dim sum adventure. The menu was quite extensive, offering a wide variety of choices. I started with the classics – har gow (shrimp dumplings) and siu mai (chicken dumplings), steam paus (meat filled buns), etc. The dim sums are made in house and they look different that the usual dim sums that I am used to eating.

When the dim sum arrived they came in various colours such as blue, red, etc. The dim sums are delicious and quite impressive, with their juicy fillings and savory taste, a true testament to their chef’s recipe especially being halal dim sum.
Tasty and delicious as they are I do have some recommendations for Canning Dim Sum. Some of the dim sum’s skins were a tad bit thick. A thinner skin will make them excellent. We also enjoyed some of the fried variety like fried squid dim sum, bacon roll dim sums, etc.
Bacon roll dim sum. Not bad.

After enjoying the normal type of dim sums we decided to try dim sums that are a class above the rest. These dim sums are Abalone dim sum, and sea cucumber dim sum. Both are really delicious. The taste of the abalone, and the taste of the sea cucumber are well infused the in the dim sum. I definitely recommend these tasty delicacies. One tip; don’t eat them with the carrots that both dim sums sit on.
Throughout our meal, the service at Canning Dim Sum was attentive and friendly. The staffs were knowledgeable, offering recommendations and ensuring that we were happy with our experience. The restaurant’s commitment to quality and authenticity was evident in every dish I sampled.

I wished I had more space in my tummy to allow me to savour more dim sums but unfortunately I just could not eat anymore. I was thoroughly satisfied. Canning Dim Sum had was an awesome experience. It is not often that I come across halal dim sum that is good, and this is. Whether you’re a dim sum enthusiast or a curious first-timer, this gem in Ipoh is a must-visit destination for anyone seeking a taste of true culinary artistry.
