Satay is one of those foods Malaysians take very seriously. Suggest your favourite stall and someone will immediately tell you theirs is better. Mention the best peanut sauce and suddenly you’ve started a debate that could last until next year’s Hari Raya.
Then along comes Beh Leh Hainam Satay in Melaka. It does not look like another satay stall. It does not smells like another satay stall. The place is delightfullly old-school, a reminder of what restaurants look like back in the day.
The place may give you fuzzy feelings triggered by fond memories. A kind of familiarity especially for those who have raked up the numbers when it comes to experiencing Earth. Then you dip your first skewer into the sauce and your brain quietly says, “Hang on… something interesting is happening here.” The difference? Pineapple.
Yes, this here is where the difference lie… the pineapple infused satay peanut sauce.
Yes, pineapple. The fruit that Sponge bob Square Pants calls home. Well, not enough to confuse the peanut sauce into becoming fruit salad. Just enough to add a gentle sweetness and brightness that sneaks into every bite. It lifts the richness without stealing the spotlight. It is like inviting one slightly eccentric friend to dinner who somehow makes the entire evening more entertaining.
That little twist gives Beh Leh Hainam Satay its own personality.
Now, let’s be honest. Is this the greatest satay in Malaysia? No. Not at all. There are satay stalls scattered across this beautiful country that would happily challenge that title, and depending on who you ask, every answer will be different anyway.
Pork satay, delicious.
Food is wonderfully personal. But that is not the point. The point is that Beh Leh Hainam Satay isn’t trying to be everyone else. It has its own identity, and in a world where so many places copy each other, that deserves applause.
The real star of the evening, at least for me, was the pork satay. Juicy, tender, and tasty. Beautifully grilled. Packed with enough smoky flavour to remind you why charcoal and meat have been best friends for centuries.
Each skewer disappeared far too quickly. You tell yourself you’ll stop after the next one. Then somehow another stick magically appears in your hand. I suspect there is some form of delicious black magic involved.
The chicken satay? It is enjoyable. Nothing that made me leap from my chair and compose poetry on the spot, but certainly good enough that if you’re already there, you might as well order a few sticks.
After all, variety is one of life’s greatest pleasures. Besides, nobody has ever looked at a plate of satay and complained there was too much. Well… almost nobody.
What I appreciate most about Beh Leh Hainam Satay is that it knows exactly what it wants to be. It doesn’t need fancy presentations. It doesn’t need dramatic marketing slogans. It simply serves honest food with its own Hainanese character and lets the flavours do the talking.
Variety is good. And if you’re wondering about the cendol, yes, its tasty too.
That pineapple infused peanut sauce quietly whispers, “We’re a little different.” And sometimes, being a little different is exactly what makes a place memorable.
So if I find myself back in Melaka and decide that today is a day for non halal satay, I already know where my steering wheel is pointing. Straight to Beh Leh Hainam Satay. Not because it claims to serve the world’s greatest satay. But because sometimes you’re not looking for the greatest. You’re looking for something with character. Something that surprises you just enough to make you smile. And perhaps another few sticks of that excellent pork satay, with delicious pineapple infused peanut sauce. You know… purely for research purposes.
